Joyful Christmas Confidence: Jesus is the Christ (Matthew 1:1–17)

Main Idea: In Matthew 1:1–17, we see that Jesus is the promised son of Abraham and King David, so that this advent season, we may have joyful confidence that Jesus is the Christ.
Why should we have confidence that Jesus is the Christ?
a. Jesus is the promised royal Son of Abraham (1:1, 1–6)
i. The OT promise of Messiah as Son from Abraham (Gen 12:1–3, 17:6, 18:17–18, 49:10,)
ii. The NT proof of Jesus as Son of Abraham (vv. 1–6, Acts 3:23–26)
b. Jesus is the promised royal Son of David (1:1, 7–16)
i. The OT promise of Messiah as Son from David (1 Chron 17:7–15, Is 9:6–7, Jer 23:5–6)
ii. The NT proof of Jesus as the Son of David (vv. 7–16)
Why should we have joyful confidence that Jesus is the Christ?
a. Because God is real and keeps all his promises
i. He does not forget
ii. He does not fail
b. Because God redeems and saves sinners
i. All by his grace
ii. All through his Son Jesus
What should we do with this joyful confidence that Jesus is the Christ?
a. Praise – Rejoice with great joy and worship Christ!” (Mt 2:2, 10, Mt 28:17)
b. Proclaim – Tell someone the King has come with salvation! (Mt 1:21, Mt 28:18–20)
c. Pray – Ask, “Lord, bear fruit through me until you come!” and pray: “Come, Lord Jesus!” (Mt 28:20, Rev 22:20–21)
