The Praise He Deserves and We Need (Psalm 124)
Sermon Notes:
Main idea: In Psalm 124, we see three God-glorifying and soul-reorienting components of corporate worship, so that we will show up together each week and give God the humble, grateful, and confident praise that He deserves and we need.
Reflect with humility at your past deliverance(s) (124:1–5)
a. What would have happened without Him?
i. Devoured: Swallowed alive (v. 3)
ii. Drowned: Swept away (v. 4–5)
b. What does this remind us of?
i. Man’s weakness: We could not deliver ourselves.
ii. God’s might: He alone can deliver us
iii. God’s mercy: We did not deserve this deliverance
iv. God’s favor: He delivered us. He is for us.
c. What should this cause you to do? (124:1)
i. Give God the humble, grateful praise He deserves!
Rejoice with gratitude in your present freedom (124:6–7)
a. What happened to you?
i. Ensnared: Caught alive, about to be devoured (124:6–7)
ii. Delivered:
1. The snare was shattered (124:7b)
2. We have escaped! (124:7a, b)
b. What should this cause you to do?
i. Give God the humble, grateful, exuberant praise He deserves!
Rely with confidence on his future help (124:8)
a. Why should you look forward with confidence and not fear?
i. Your hope is not in yourself; it's not in man; it's not in angels or demons;
it’s not in creation but the Creator.ii. Your help is in the LORD who made heaven and earth. No creaturely
opposition can thwart him.iii. If you are in Christ, He is for you. Nothing in all creation can separate us
from him (Romans 8:31–39)b. What should this cause you to do?
