The Law and Its Proper Use (1 Timothy 1:8-11)

  1. The Law is good. (v. 8, Rom 7:7-13)

  2. The Law is not made for believers. (v. 9a)

    a. Because believers are the righteousness of God. (2 Cor 5:21, Rom 8:1-2)

    b. Because believers are no longer under the Mosaic law. (Rom 7:1-4)

    c. Because believers are now under the law of Christ. (1 Cor 9:20-21)

  3. The Law’s benefits for the believer.

    a. The Law reveals God’s nature.

    b. The Law reveals Christ.

    c. The Law provides wisdom.

  4. The Law is made for unbelievers. (vv. 9b-10, Gal 3:19)

    a. The Law convicts the unrighteous of sin. (Rom 3:20)

    b. The Law reveals our need for the gospel. (Gal 3:23-25)

  5. The Gospel is the answer to the Law. (vv. 10b-11)

    a. The Gospel produces spiritual health. (v. 10b, Eph 2:1-6)

    b. The Gospel reveals the glory of the blessed God. (v. 11a)

    c. The Gospel is a gift we must protect and share with others. (v. 11b)
